On May 6th, the top place winners from Code/Art Miami 2017 got to visit the Miami office of Facebook. They got a tour that included stories behind some of the inspirational posters on display. “Be the Nerd” came about from a conversation that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had with a man who told him he hoped his daughter would marry a nerd like Mark. Mark replied, better that she “be the nerd.” And the “Women are Perfect” poster seeks to dispel imposter syndrome, something that many women suffer from and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg discusses in her book Lean In.
After the tour, there was an Arduino workshop, where the girls learned to program a microprocessor to control the color and rate of blinking LED lights that were than soldered together and made into a bracelet to take home along with some fun Facebook swag. And, of course, everyone got to sign the Facebook Wall before leaving! 🙂
Thanks, Facebook Miami!
